Otoplasty

When you feel that your ears are too big, small, or protruding, it can harm your self-confidence and self-image.  Otoplasty is a reconstructive surgery that can be used to solve cosmetic ear issues.  Find out why so many choose SP Plastic Surgery in Minnetonka, MN, to transform their ears through cosmetic surgery.

What Is Otoplasty?

Otoplasty is a type of ear surgery during which a plastic surgeon can reshape, resize, and reposition ears. It is a commonly chosen plastic surgery for people who want to fix protruding ears or to give unusual-looking ears a more natural shape.

Otoplasty is performed on the outer ear, which is composed of folds of cartilage. When the cartilage doesn't develop properly in youth, it can negatively affect the size, shape, and position of the ears.

What Makes a Good Candidate?

Most folks who desire otoplasty should be good candidates. These are some specifics we look for when evaluating people at our Minnetonka, MN, practice:

Adult Patients

It is important to note that we do not perform pediatric plastic surgery. The ears of children 5 years and younger are not fully developed anyway, so the otoplasty is not recommended for them anyway.

Good Overall Health

There are cases where underlying medical conditions or illnesses can make the ear surgery risky or complicate the healing process.

Non-Smokers

Smoking often decreases blood flow to the ears. Being a smoker is likely to slow down and complicate post-surgery healing.

Specific Goals

It is best if you have a clear idea what you want out of otoplasty. Doing this procedure for yourself, rather than because of comments from others will make the process more empowering.

Our plastic surgeons can perform a medical evaluation at our Minnetonka, MN, office and will only recommend otoplasty if we believe you can safely undergo and benefit from the procedure.

The Otoplasty Surgical Timeline

The specifics of your ear surgery will depend on the type of procedure you choose. Generally speaking, this reconstructive surgery is completed at our Minnetonka, MN, office in one to three hours.

Simple Steps

Calming Anesthesia

Our highly trained plastic surgeon team administers general anesthesia to relieve any anxiety and maintain your comfort.

Precise Incision

Our incisions are made to increase ear size or reduce cartilage, depending on your goals. Incisions are typically placed on the back of the ear so they are not noticeable. Any incisions needed in more visible areas are placed between folds of cartilage so they are less apparent.

Stitch and Suture

Sutures are used to secure the changes your surgeon makes to the cartilage and skin tissue. All care is taken to make your new ear shape and size look as natural and flattering as possible. Your ears will receive dressings to protect them over the next week.

Otoplasty Aftercare

When you leave our Minnetonka, MN, office, you will receive simple instructions from our plastic surgeons to make sure you get the most out of your ear surgery. These will likely include:

  • Keep the dressing on your ears clean and dry
  • Do not touch or scratch your ears
  • Do not rest on your ears while sleeping
  • Do not wear clothes that pull over your head
  • Follow any prescriptions you are given
  • Notify us if there are any complications

How Much Will This Cost?

Some factors such as anesthesia use and necessary prescriptions may raise the overall cost.

Typically, health insurance companies do not cover cosmetic ear surgeries. If there is a medical issue that may be relieved by otoplasty it is possible insurance would cover the treatment.

To help patients afford the treatment they want and need, we work with CareCredit®. CareCredit is an option that allows you to make low-interest and interest-free monthly payments.
